Group urges NOSDRA DG to tackle environmental issues in Akwa Ibom


A group, Akwa Ibom Oil Producing Community Development Network, has appealed to the new Director-General, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, Engr Chukwuemeka Woke, to look into the unattended issues of remediation and damaged assessment which have been denied the state over time.

The President General of the group, Dr Phenson Ufot, stated this in statement made available to our correspondent in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Monday.

Ufot while congratulating the new DG on his appointment urged him to ensure adequate protection of the environment which he said had been degraded by the activities of oil and gas companies.

Parts of the statement said, “The public expectations of your office spans to include specific attention to the protection of the Niger Delta Environment in particular and Nigeria in general from the devastation brought by the incessant Oil spills, unmindful economic activities occasioned by the operations of oil and gas companies and other destroyers of our environment.

“It’s expected that you will use the full weight of your office to ensure the protection of the environment which is our heritage for the overall development and enhancement of the well beings of the citizenry.

“It’s our hope that you will implement the core mandate of your agency including timely oil spill recovery, clean up, remediation and damaged assessment which hitherto had been denied Akwa-Ibom State, thereby hindering the payment of compensation to the victims of hydrocarbon pollution in the Oil Producing communities of the state.”
